Our History

Kelly Creek Community Church grew from an existing ministry called “Faith Mission” that started in 1956. Faith Mission was a Sunday school that was being held in what was known as the, “Stillwater Community Hall”. This Sunday school was involved in running Vacation Bible School during the summer months.

In 1957, the two women that were leading the “Faith Mission” ministry approached the Stephenson and Graham families, along with the Foster family to see if they were willing to take over.

Those families that were asked to take over the “Faith Mission” Sunday school would eventually become those that began the ministry of Kelly Creek Church.

From 1957-1970, the Sunday school and Vacation Bible school were a thriving ministry in the southern part of Powell River.

In 1968 members of the leadership at that time purchased 7 acres of land on Zillinsky Road for $3500 and believed in faith that this land would eventually be used.

In 1970 the Sunday school was moved from Stillwater Community Hall to Kelly Creek School and stayed there until 1972

In that fall of 1971 what was known as at the time as “Grace Chapel of Powell River” was beginning the building faze of a growing ministry.

On Saturday Sept 16/1972 the very first event that was held in this new church building—was a wedding, followed by a worship service the next day.

From 1972-1982 the church experienced growth, health and God’s blessing, and the church was raised from a single floor building to become a two-story building—which the basement would eventually be occupied by a pre-school that ran during the week.

The heart of Kelly Creek Community Church during these years was a strong youth ministry and the support of missions locally and around the world.

Through the established decades of the ministry of KCCC many people came to receive Jesus, got baptized, and served God in a variety of ways within the community.

In 2000 the church took on another building project—this time an addition to the rear of the building that permitted a fellowship room and more space downstairs. It was also around this time that key families and youth began leaving town for work and post-secondary education. By 2004-2005 the church numbers had dropped and it became discouraging at times to those that remained.

In August of 2007 while Mike Martinig, now the lead Pastor of KCCC was wrapping up his vacation time, and God began to speak to him each morning. God asked the same question, “What about Kelly Creek Church?”. Mike's response was “God, what about Kelly Creek Church?”.

For seven days, God would wake him up each day with this same question.

When Mike came back to work He mentioned this to his mentor Roland Lewis, who was Pastoring locally at the time, and he said he would look into it. Roland began to speak to a few of the leaders at Kelly Creek and asked them how things were going. Roland soon found out that KCCC's numbers were down and they were looking to God for guidance on what their next move was to be. Roland told the leaders of KCCC that Westview Baptist church where Mike Martinig was associate Pastor, had this man that they had been training that might be an asset to them.

In October of 2007, Lucia and Mike Martinig were on their way to a church planter’s assessment to find out if they were really ready to help re-plant a church.

They were recommended to KCCC that same month.

In November, Mike began meeting with KCCC leadership about the prospect of becoming their very first pastor. In February 2008, KCCC congregation put the decision to a vote, and in April 2008 began the start of a new adventure.

Romans 10:14-15 “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?”
